MANILA, Philippines — Every now and then, newbie actor Mikael Daez would find himself looking back at his biggest heartbreak, at times even imagining about what life could have been like.

That heartbreak wasn’t brought about by unrequited love or a jilted romantic proposition though. Mikael calls it his very own “basketball drama.’’

“I watch a UAAP basketball game then it suddently hits me, the what could have beens. I thought, I want that to be me, and I regret what I did,” says Mikael, who was part of the Ateneo basketball varsity team since grade 5, until he had to leave the Blue Eagles team in college. Mikael only has himself to blame.

“I really love the sport until now. But I was lazy. I didn’t like practice. I didn’t have the right attitude and mindset going into it, which is really unfortunate because I felt I could have been successful.

Naiwanan na ako ng iba. It was only later on in college, after I left the team, that I realized the value of hard work,” relates the six-foot-tall Mikael.

Today, he is able to apply those lessons from the past, as he works as an actor. “It hurts, but it feels good now. I’m glad that the learnings that I got from that, I’m able to apply to my work and my life now. Modeling and acting are crafts and in any craft, you have to continuously work on it and improve. Right now, I’m just trying to take in what I’ve learned from school, from modeling, and applying it here,” he continues.

Mikael never had a concrete plan after graduating with a Business Administration degree from the Ateneo de Manila University last year. Joining showbiz was the farthest thing from his mind as he always saw himself either as an investment banker or an entrepreneur.

“I liked Math as a kid, and it kinda liked me back. We have a very good relationship. Eventually, I want my own deli or a pizza parlor. I personally feel that obligation to take care of my younger brothers and sisters and to help out financially because we’re so many. That’s how we were raised, to help out the family in any way you can,” relates the 23-year-old Mikael, the second among eight siblings.

After graduation, Mikael tried ramp modeling and stood out enough to be noticed by Mercator modeling agency. After a string of commercials, he was offered to try acting, but was initially reluctant. “I was never really into the industry. I was detached. First and foremost, I have zero acting background. Secondly, everybody warned me about everything, sex, drugs, rock and roll. My family warned me paulitulit.

They just want me to come out of this alive and well,” he adds.

Mikael admits that everyday, he still has to deal with apprehensions about his new-found career. Even his family and friends have their own apprehensions. “Were they laughing the whole time? Yes. Are they still laughing now? Yes. Will they be laughing tomorrow?

Yes. My family and friends know it’s not my choice of career when I was younger. At the end of the day, teasing and jokes aside, I have complete faith in them that they are going to support me and help me throughout this.”

The most important thing, he says, is to possess the ability to overcome these apprehensions.

“It is such a big shift from where I saw myself before, so I tell myself this is my job. It is still a business.

“Now that I’m in the business and meet all these people, I really see the discipline that they put to their work. It doesn’t matter what kind of education you have, as long as you have the discipline, the work ethic, the zest for life, and that passion for what you do, that’s inspiring.”

As for his advice to young people who are yet to decide about their future?

“Just stay true to yourself. If you can maintain that truth, then I guess, you could consider your life fulfilling. It’s hard to dictate to other people what you should or should not do. If you have a clear mind, you’ll always know,” he ends.

MANILA, Philippines — With piercing eyes and a devil-maycare attitude, Andi Eigenmann has this very intimidating air about her that some people may mistake as intentional haughtiness, making the young star seem unapproachable or plainly put, a snob. A second look would prove that it’s neither bad attitude nor a mere veil to protect her privacy — the girl just has spunk and she’s definitely not afraid to show it.

“I don’t like it when people try to step on my beliefs. I have my own principles and I live by them,” Andi says, while meticulously watching over how her make-up was being done for the shoot. “I don’t let any one rule my life, I make decisions for myself.”

“Before I entered showbiz, a lot of the things I liked doing involved only myself. They didn’t require much company,” she says.

The self-confessed late bloomer might have gone through the awkward stage that every teenager grows out of, but her unconventional family also contributed to why she was very different from the rest of the girls in school since day one.

It was her not-so-normal familial set-up that developed her strong character and independent nature.

“There were times when I would be insecure, but I’m a very happy-golucky person so it never really showed. I would always be more hyper than I was insecure—more a big ball of energy than I was shy,” Andi quips.

Growing up with celebrity relatives, Andi was never a stranger to the spotlight, but she wasn’t the type who wanted it perennially on her as well. In fact, Andi admits to being an introvert when she was younger.

The Neil Gaiman fan also confessed to being quite the rebel when she was in high school.

“I think everyone goes through that, but I was a rebel with a cause. My being rebellious was always within reason, and my reasons were not stupid or childish. It was when her brother, Sid Lucero, broke into the independent film industry that Andi started thinking about pursuing a career of her own. When she finally did, it was both a surprise and a realization of an unspoken expectationin the family.

“I was lucky enough to be given ‘Agua Bendita.’ It was truly a blessing. I got more than I what bargained for,” she says.

"It wasn’t about entering showbiz, it was about becoming an actress,” says Andi, who shares that her dream roles would be along the lines of Maria Clara, or any character in a period production, preferably situated in the Spanish era.

Pretty baby

Despite all the projects that have come her way, there are things that Andi admits to missing about being a “regular” girl, which is harder to go back to now that she is expecting her first child.

“Of course I miss hanging out…being able to plan — just having a definite schedule. Before, whenever I wanted to do things for fun, I actually could. I miss being able to block an entire week, but the thing I miss the most is school. Nothing beats being a student, it’s the easiest part of life,” she says, adding that when she entered showbiz, the absence of her friends and family made her realize how much strength she gets from their presence.

"Pursuing a career in this business is really something to think about,” Andi says, while she fondly remembers all the things she missed about her life before. She shares advice with those who want to break into the business and promises that the road they’ll be taking will be as difficult as it is gratifying. “Hindi masarap ang buhay ng artista dahil artista siya, dahil ‘yun sa marami siyang pinagdinaanan. Kung gaano ka tamis, ganun din ‘yung pait,” she muses.

One of the things that ticks her off is the stereotype that actors are pushed into the business just because their profession honeycoats their lives with so-called glitz.

“Akala nila glamorous? It’s not so simple. We earned that. We work for that. If some people find school difficult, all the more will they be challenged by choosing to pursue a show business,” she defends.

Now that the actress has a baby on the way, it’ll give her the opportunity to take the break that she wants. While she is going to put her acting career on pause, she hopes to get back to work as soon as possible so her plans still

go smoothly.

With a good head on her shoulders and the ability to exude awesomeness so awesome that it borders on scary, Andi definitely has a lot more in store for her.

MANILA, Philippines -- The process of learning never stops for Brazilian-Japanese model Fabio Ide. That is basically the reason why he grabbed the opportunity to be a model, so he can travel the world, discover, and explore different cultures. And of course, there is the process of earning while having fun.

“In the beginning I was shy. I don’t know if I wanted to do this. Then when I started working and making good money from modeling, that was when I said, ok I’ll do this. When I was offered to work in Hong Kong, that’s when I realized, through modeling I can explore the world. I can learn so many different things,” relates Fabio, who was then trying to finish a Marketing degree, while doing modeling on the side.

Fabio has already graced the pages of various catalogues and magazine editorials and has walked the ramps in China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Los Angeles, and Capetown in South Africa.

And like his fellow Brapanese models Daniel Matsunaga and Akihiro Sato, Fabio has found a new home in the Philippines.

Not known to many, Fabio paved the way for the other Brazilian models to eke a career here in the Philippines. He was the first to land here in 2006.

Fabio is currently seen in three shows on GMA, including the late-night Saturday show Comedy Bar, a sitcom (Andres de Saya) and a talk show (Tweetbiz Insiders).

“I wasn’t expecting to be working on these shows all at the same time but I’m happy and I feel so blessed. But at the same time there’s pressure to really focus on my career and make it work.

To prove that I deserve all these breaks I’m getting. I keep on hearing people saying, ‘oh he’s just good looking.’ I want to prove to them and myself that I have the talent as well.”

“I told myself, this year is the year when I will improve myself and speak really good Tagalog. Everything is different that’s why it’s a challenge. If I’m in Brazil, with the experience that I have, maybe I would be a big star there now. But here, for you to get there, it takes awhile, and that’s the challenge. You have to study a lot to improve yourself as a model and as an actor,” explains Fabio.
